Schmaltz, Carvalho named Mustang Athletes of the Week

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College athletics department has selecting its weekly award winners, naming sophomore Renee Schmaltz (Beaumont, Alberta) and senior Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, Ontario) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 27.

Schmaltz posted a 3-0 record between the pipes to keep the women's ice hockey team undefeated at 9-0-0 to date on the season, as she collectively turned away 71 of 72 shots faced for a 98.6 save percentage across three games.

She started the week with a season high 37 saves in a 2-0 victory over Hamilton to collect her fifth shutout of the season, before adding 13 additional saves in the 9-0 rout of Nichols to register her sixth game on the year that has left opponents scoreless.

Schmaltz capped off the week with 21 saves in a 4-1 decision over New England College.

The sophomore is an environmental science and natural resources conservation major at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Jacquelene and Paul Schmaltz of Beaumont, Alberta.

Carvalho had a three point outing for the Mustangs men's ice hockey team in a 5-5 overtime draw with No. 3 ranked UMass-Boston on Saturday.

The senior posted the first score for Morrisville State just over a minute into the second period to spark a two goal rally to get back in the contest. He added two assists in the third, including on the game tying score in the final minute of the period to force extra time.

Carvalho currently leads the Mustangs in points with 11, scoring twice and assisting nine others.

The senior is a business administration major at Morrisville State. He is the son of Anne and Ray Carvalho of Brampton, Ontario.
