Woodard, Martin named Mustang Athletes of the Week

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College athletics department has announced its weekly award winners, naming junior's Marissa Woodard (Unadilla, N.Y.) and Layne Martin (Findlay, Ohio) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 29.

Woodard, center for the women's basketball team, assisted the Mustangs to a 3-0 week with her performance on the court.

The junior posted six rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots in the midweek win over then undefeated North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rival SUNY Polytechnic, before collecting 14 points and seven rebounds, to go along with two steals in the win over Wilson. Six of her boards came on the offensive glass for the Mustangs.

Woodard wrapped up her week with a collegiate high 23 points and seven rebounds, again snagging six offensive boards, in the win over Gallaudet.

The junior is a graduate of Unatego High and is majoring in criminal justice at Morrisville State. She is the daughter of Betsy and Tim Woodard of Unadilla.

Martin posted two goals as Morrisville State men's hockey handed nationally ranked #4 Geneseo the 5-2 upset on Friday night.

He tallied his first goal of the game just 1:38 into the opening period for the early Mustang lead, and secured the win with a short-handed score late in the third, for a two point weekend. He finished the contest with a +1 on ice rating, and posted 7-of-14 faceoff wins.

To date, Martin has netted seven goals and assisted another four, collecting 11 points, leading the team in short-handed scores.

A nursing major at Morrisville State, Martin is the son of Tiffani and Thomas Martin of Findlay.
