MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of John J. Devencenzo, former Morrisville State Athletic Director and Wrestling Coach, on Monday, April 25, 2017, in Bonita Springs, Florida.
For 30 years until his retirement in 1992, Devencenzo served as not only a coach of wrestling (19 years) and baseball (10 years), but also as a physical education professor and director of athletics for the Mustangs.
Under guidance of Devencenzo, the Mustangs were crowned Empire State Champions in baseball in 1965.
Among his wrestling team's unprecedented accomplishments stand four NJCAA Region III Championships, a string of 36 consecutive match victories, and a career record of 247 wins, 14 losses and two ties.
Named the NJCAA Region III Coach of the Year in 1966, Devencenzo coached Gary Seymour to a NJCAA National Title at 191 pounds in 1966; and in all 11 NJCAA All-Americans.
He was honored with induction into the Region III Coaches Hall of Fame and NJCAA Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1982. Devencenzo was also part of the first induction class to the Mustang Wall of Fame in 1997.
