MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Morrisville State athletics has announced its weekly award winners, naming junior Megyan Merrill (Millport, N.Y.) and senior Brandon Gwinner (Schenectady, N.Y.) the Mustang Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 2.
Merrill led Morrisville State volleyball to a 4-1 opening weekend record at their own tournament. The junior outside hitter registered a total 79 kills, one assist, 37 digs, seven service aces and 86 total points in five matches on the weekend at the Morrisville State tournament.
She posted a single match high 23 kills in a 3-1 win over Hartwick and five service aces in a 3-0 sweep of Buffalo State. In the match against Oswego Saturday, Merrill became the all-time leader in kills for the Mustangs at 704.
On the weekend she averaged 4.65 kills per set, and finished the weekend with a .303 hitting percentage.
Gwinner paced Morrisville State football in a 34-13 season opening win over non-conference Norwich University Saturday afternoon.
In the contest, the senior quarterback connected on 22-of-31 passes for 311-yards, a .707 completion rate, throwing four touchdown scores of 7-, 33-, 7-, and 58-yards each as Morrisville State posted a total 459 yards offense on the day.
Three of his strikes came in the first half of action as Morrisville State held the 24-7 lead at the break over the hosts.
