Mustangs Return to Win Column Thanks to Leva’s Hat Trick

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Field Hockey team rebounded from their first away loss this past week by defeating Wells College on the road 4-2.

Freshman Hayley Fonfara (Elma, N.Y.) opened the scoring for Morrisville at the 22:09 mark in the first half off of a corner opportunity.  Fonfara followed the deflection off of her initial shot for the 1-0 lead.

Just over three minutes later, Wells was able to even up the score off of a pass from Kelly Mason to Kate Wells.  Despite 18 combined shots in the opening half, neither team was able to take the lead headed into halftime.

The second half was a different story for the Mustangs as they controlled most of the action, out shooting the Express 21-6.  At the 44:53 mark, Elizabeth Leva (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) gave Morrisville the one goal lead as she took a rebound and deposited it just inside the left post.

Just under three minutes later, Leva struck again for the unassisted tally after a scrum in front of the cage.  The score would remain 3-1 in favor of the visiting Mustangs for the next eight minutes.

Morrisville recorded their fourth goal of the game, once again off of the stick of Leva with 4:20 remaining in the game.  Lauren Kellum (Morrisville, N.Y.) was able to find some room on the right side of the field before she crossed to the ball to a streaking Leva coming from the left.

The Express were able to cut the lead in half with nine seconds remaining, but ultimately the Mustangs would hang on for the 4-2 victory.

Emma Gottung (Caroga Lake, N.Y.) recorded six saves for Morrisville State.

Next up for the Mustangs is their conference opener at home on Wednesday, September 13 against New Paltz at 5 PM.
