Morrisville State men to meet Christopher Newport in opening round of NCAA Tournament

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced its 2017 Division III Men's Basketball Tournament pairings, set to begin Friday, March 3rd, sending Morrisville State on the road to face Christopher Newport in the opening round at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.

The Mustangs claimed their fourth North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) tournament title Sunday, and will make their fourth overall appearance under head coach Joseph Smith in the NCAA Tournament, with a 22-6 record.

Morrisville State will face two-time Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) champion Christopher Newport (25-2) Friday, tipping off at 6 p.m. at Swarthmore. Both teams will be meeting for the first time in program history.

The winners of the first round matchup will advance to the second round, held at Swarthmore College at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and will face the winner of Swarthmore and Staten Island College.

Morrisville State is no stranger to tournament play in recent history, making their fourth appearance in eight years, advancing as far as the Elite Eight in 2013-14. Their task will be no small feat, however, as the Capitals make the trip for the 21st time, and a fourth time in seven years, including a Final Four appearance just a year ago.

The complete tournament bracket can be found here.

Additional tournament information will be made available once released from Swarthmore, and can be found on the college's athletic web site at
