MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team returned to the win column on Friday night as they upset visiting Utica College 5-2 in a non-conference matchup.
The Mustangs tried to assert themselves early in the game, outshooting the visiting Pioneers 7-1 early in the first period. Unfortunately the home team could not convert their early offensive burst into a tally. Two penalties in the middle of the period forced the Mustangs to play short-handed for four minutes, allowing Utica to get their offense going. Morrisville was up to the task, weathering both storms.
After a scoreless first period, Utica punched in the first goal, just one minute and eleven seconds into the second period. Just over ten minutes later though, Joseph Santino (Woodbridge, Ontario) evened the score as he redirected David Landau's (Newtown, Conn.) strike from the blue line.
Eight minutes after that, the Mustangs pulled ahead 2-1 when John Lauer (Syracuse, N.Y.) converted on a scrum in front of the crease. Santino and Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, Ontario) were credited with the assists.
Morrisville found themselves in a bit of trouble at the start of the third period, at one point skating two men down. However, after the return of one of the two penalties, Layne Martin (Findlay, Ohio) broke up a pass and skated free for the break-away short-handed goal, extending the Mustangs' lead to 3-1.
The Pioneers would not go quietly, scoring at the 11:47 mark to bring the score to 3-2.
Morrisville gave Utica a chance to get back in the game just under two minutes later when they were caught with a tripping penalty. The Mustangs were once again up to the task and after killing the penalty, their seventh penalty kill of the game, Santino put the Mustangs up 4-2 at the 15:20 mark. CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Vt.) tallied the assist.
Despite being up two goals, the Mustangs had one more storm to weather when the Pioneers pulled their goalie with just over two and a half minutes left in regulation. With Utica up one more skater, the Morrisville defense was up to the task. Stubbs put the exclamation point on the win scoring on an empty netter with just four seconds remaining in the game off of a broken up pass by Santino.
Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo.) picked up the win in goal for the Mustangs, turning away 52 of Utica's 54 shots on goal.
Morrisville will return to the ice tomorrow night as they take on the Kangaroos from SUNY Canton at 7:00 PM in the Ice Plex.
