MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Men's Ice Hockey team finally suited up for the first time in 2017 as they traveled to SUNY Canton for a non-conference road contest on Tuesday night. However, the Roos outlasted the Mustangs 2-1 in a gritty affair.
The Roos asserted themselves early, posting a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into action. After matching the home team shot for shot over the next eight minutes, the Mustangs were able to even the score on a power play goal by Joseph Santino (Woodbridge, Ontario) at the 12:46 mark. Jordan Carvalho (Brampton, Ontario) and CJ Stubbs (Pleasant Grove, Vt.) were credited with the assists.
SUNY Canton pulled ahead late in the second period as the Roos tallied a power play goal of their own at the 17:13 mark. Joey Vocino redirected a shot from the point in front of the net just past the Mustangs' goal tender, Jared Young (Pueblo West, Colo.).
With the Roos up 2-1 entering into the third, Morrisville looked for a little comeback magic. Unfortunately, none could be found for the Mustangs as the score would remain the same for a SUNY Canton victory.
Despite suffering the loss in goal, Young recorded 33 saves on the evening.
The Mustangs will hit the road again on Thursday to take on Johnson and Wales, a re-scheduled contest from January 7, before returning home on Friday afternoon to take on Neumann at 4 PM.
