MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Senior forward Julian Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) scored the lone goal of the contest in the 55th minute Wednesday evening as host Morrisville State College men's soccer downed visiting Utica College by a 1-0 final decision on Drake Field in Morrisville.
The win is the first for the Mustangs, who improve their record to 1-3 overall. Utica drops to 3-3.
Senior midfielder Ryan Paddock (Montville, N.J.) set up the go ahead tally, heading the ball up field to an approaching Rodriguez. Utica goalkeeper Jonathan Side came out to cut off Rodriguez, but the senior had a one-touch around the keeper to put the low shot inside the left post for the Morrisville State lead.
Utica had a chance to even the score six minutes later, as they had a breakaway 2-on-1 opportunity, but center back Daniel Sparkowski (East Meadow, N.Y.) broke up the Pioneers attempt to keep the game scoreless.
Utica had another opportunity with just over seven minutes remaining in the game, as Morrisville State goalkeeper Cody Welkley (North Rose, N.Y.) came out to challenge a shot attempt by Thomas Muller, but forced the shot just left of the left post.
Welkley recorded the win in net for the Mustangs, making five stops.
Morrisville State returns to the field Saturday, hosting Oswego State at 4 p.m.
