MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State Women's Ice Hockey team looked to avenge their first loss of the season last night against Utica. However, the Mustangs fell 3-2 in the return trip to the Pioneers home ice.
Utica picked up right where they left off on Friday evening, picking up the first goal of the game on Saturday afternoon just 97 seconds into the game. However, the Mustangs turned the tides when Kanekaroroks McComber (Kahnawake, Quebec) broke up a Pioneers pass and found Maddison Devlin (Campbell River, British Columbia) sneaking out ahead of the pack. Devlin looked up to find a streaking, Kaitlyn Schlake (Nampa, Idaho) who beat Utica's goaltender for the equalizer.
With the score knotted up at 1-1, Morrisville broke through the defense once again just over three minutes later. Renee Stevenson (Winnipeg, Manitoba) passed ahead to Vanessa Klimpke (Winnipeg, Manitoba) with one defender to beat. Klimpke made one fake and found the top right shelf for the 2-1 lead.
The lead would be short lived as the Pioneers and the Mustangs entered into the second period as Utica took advantage of a Morrisville hooking penalty five minutes and thirty four seconds in, to tie the game up at 2 goals apiece. The score would remain that way for the rest of the second as both teams traded power play opportunities, but neither were able to find the go-ahead goal.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs, a strike from Utica's Emily Coope as she cut in front of the crease, put the Pioneers up 3-2 with just over five minutes left in the game.
Morrisville will turn their attention to SUNY Potsdam as they host the Bears in a non-conference match up on Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM in the Ice Plex.
