MEMPHIS, TN – Host Rhodes College got off to a quick start and buried the Mustangs early on as Morrisville State College women's lacrosse dropped its season opener by a 22-5 non-conference final Tuesday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee.
Three Mustangs posted goals in the efforts on the day, including Gianna Branca (Camillus, N.Y.) and Liz Leva (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) who each netted two. Jillian Hughes (Brookfield, N.Y.) rounded out Morrisville State scoring with one goal.
Kallie George (Tully, N.Y.) recorded the loss between the pipes, making 13 stops, as Rhodes peppered the junior with 41 shots over the course of two periods.
Rhodes scored the first 10 goals of the contest before Morrisville State was able to get on the board with an unassisted tally from Hughes with 12:10 to go in the opening period.
Three additional host goals increased their lead to 13-1 before Leva posted back-to-back tallies for the Mustangs to send the game into the halftime break with a 13-3 score.
Branca collected the only two goals of the second half for Morrisville State, an unassisted goal at 18:06, and a free position tally with 4:44 to go.
Morrisville State returns to the field Thursday, playing Muskingum at Rhodes College to conclude their spring break training trip.
